The Creation of Man

Genesis 2

Galatians 2.20—I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.  The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

A Hymn of Glory Let Us Sing v.3

To them the shining angels cry,"Why stand and gaze upon the sky?" Alleluia! Alleluia! "This is the Savior," thus they say. "This is his glorious triumph day." Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

THE SECOND PETITION  Thy kingdom come.  What does this mean?  God's kingdom certainly comes by itself even without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may also come to us.

The Creation of the Heavens and the Earth

Philippians 4.13—I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
A Hymn of Glory Let Us Sing v.2

The holy apostolic band
Upon the Mount of Olives stand,
Alleluia! Alleluia!
And with his followers they see
Their Lord ascend in majesty.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

How is God's name kept holy?  God's name is kept holy when his Word is taught in its truth and purity and we as children of God lead holy lives according to it.  Help us to do this, dear Father in heaven!    But whoever teaches and lives contrary to God's Word dishonors God's name among us.  Keep us from doing this, dear Father in heaven!

Judgment Day and the Resurrection of All Flesh

Matthew 25 ; 1 Corinthians 15

Psalm 37.4-6—Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this:  He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the  noonday sun.
Christ Jesus Lay in Death’s Strong Bands v.7

Then let us feast this Easter Day On Christ, the bread of heaven;
The Word of grace has purged away The old and evil leaven.
Christ alone our souls will feed; He is our meat and drink indeed;
Faith lives upon no other!  Alleluia!  Alleluia!

THE ADDRESS  Our Father who art in heaven.  What does this mean?  With these words God tenderly invites us to believe that he is our true Father and that we are his true children, so that we may pray to him as boldly and confidently as dear children ask their dear father.

2 Corinthians 4.18—So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.  For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Christ Jesus Lay in Death’s Strong Bands v.6

So let us keep the festival To which the Lord invites us;
Christ is himself the joy of all, The sun that warms and lights us.
Now his grace to us imparts Eternal sunshine to our hearts;
The night of sin is ended. Alleluia!  Alleluia!

(Explanation of the 3rd Article Cont.) In this Christian church he daily and fully forgives all sins to me and all believers.  On the Last Day he will raise me and all the dead and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ.  This is most certainly true.

2 Corinthians 12.9—But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”  Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

Christ Jesus Lay in Death’s Strong Bands

Here the true Paschal Lamb we see, Whom God so freely gave us;
He died on the accursed tree—So strong his love—to save us.
See, his blood now marks our door; Faith points to it; death passes o’er,
And Satan cannot harm us. Alleluia!  Alleluia!

What does this (the 3rd Article of the Apostles' Creed) mean?   I believe that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him.  But the Holy Spirit has called me by the gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.  In the same way he calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.

Christ Jesus Lay in Death’s Strong Bands v.4

It was a strange and dreadful strife When life and death contended.
The victory remained with life; The reign of death was ended.
Holy Scripture plainly says That death is swallowed up by death;
Its sting is lost forever. Alleluia!  Alleluia!

THE THIRD ARTICLE  I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Christ Jesus, God’s own Son, came down, His people to deliver;
Destroying sin, he took the crown From death’s pale brow forever.
Stripped of pow’r, no more it reigns; An empty form alone remains;
Its sting is lost forever.  Alleluia!  Alleluia!

(The meaning of the 2nd Article cont.) All this he did that I should be his own, and live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence and blessedness, just as he has risen from death and lives and rules eternally.  This is most certainly true.

Jesus Shows Himself to Thomas

John 20.19-31

Hebrews 13.8—Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

(explanation of the Second Article)  What does this mean?  I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord.  He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won me from all sins, from death and from the power of the devil, not with gold or silver, but with his holy, precious blood and with his innocent suffering and death.

Christ Jesus Lay in Death's Strong Bands v.2

No son of man could conquer death, Such ruin sin had wrought us.
No innocence was found on earth, And therefore death had brought us
Into bondage from of old And ever grew more strong and bold
And held us as its captive.  Alleluia!  Alleluia!

The Resurrection of our Lord

John 20.1-18

Jeremiah 29.11—“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

THE SECOND ARTICLEI believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.  He descended into hell.  The third day he rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.  From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

1Christ Jesus lay in death’s strong bands For our offenses given;

But now at God’s right hand he stands And brings us life from heaven.
